The Crazy Reason Your House Might Have a Fake Second Door

Have you ever taken a road trip through New England and noticed something strange on the old houses? Many beautiful historic homes have a door on the second floor that opens up to absolutely nothing. These are famously known as “Coffin Doors,” and the history behind them is wild.
Back in the 1800s, colonial homes were built with incredibly narrow, winding staircases. These stairs were great for keeping heat downstairs, but they were terrible for moving large objects. When a family member passed away, it was almost impossible to carry a heavy coffin down those tight steps.
To solve this creepy problem, builders added a random door on the second floor. When someone died, the family would open the door, set up a pulley system, and slide the coffin right out of the second-story wall. It sounds bizarre to us today, but it was a completely normal piece of home architecture back then!
Thankfully, modern architecture gives us much better hallways. But next time you see a door to nowhere on an old house, you will know the spooky secret behind it.
